Gusty winds combine with Nordic air!
Many times when we see a change as big as we just experienced it doesn’t go that smoothly. We do experience side effects and usually it is gusty winds. That’s something we’ve had to deal with in many ways Thursday. First the winds have been gusting up to 40 mph. Here are the peak wind gusts for Thursday so far.

While most locations reported a dusting. here at the station we saw about .8".

How about that? Tornadoes in January? Well, that video was from Adaisrville Georgia where January tornadoes are not as rare as you would think.
It’s hard to tell the size or the intensity of the tornado from just video, since the EF-Scale is a wind scale based off of damage, but I would estimate, it was at least an EF-2 tornado.

New computer model data is available to help track current river levels and future flood potential on the St. Mary’s River and, later in 2013, Spy Run Creek from State Blvd. to just past Coliseum Blvd.
Using this online tool, developed in partnership between the City of Fort Wayne, the National Weather Service (NWS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), you can monitor the river in real-time and see just how far flood water would travel inland if the river crested at various levels (e.g. 12 ft., 15 ft., etc.).
No computer model is perfect, but this is a useful tool to help provide a general overview of flood potential and help the city and its residents prepare for flooding.

8 to 14 day outlook for the beginning of February (NOAA)
February will begin with much warmer air than usual according to the 8 to 14 outlook from the Climate Prediction Center. Temperatures will be slightly to well above average. So a nice warmer start to the month.Temperatures are beginning to trend .

Another indicator of how cold or warm it will get is the North Atlantic Oscillation. A Positive osculation will bring warmer temperatures, while a negative osculation will have colder air across the U.S. You can see by the 7th of February the trend begins to turn and colder air will move in as we have a negative osculation. There have been 4 times the number of record highs reported this year compared to record lows. So far this year 1,513 record highs have been reported as opposed to 321 lows.

When I think of forecasting in January for Northern Indiana and Northwestern Ohio, I think of snow, blizzards, wind chills and temperatures in the 30s. Not temperatures near 60° with showers and thunderstorms. If you missed out on the rumbles of thunders early Tuesday afternoon, get ready for more late Tuesday night.
Here is the break down:
Did you catch the last two bullet points there? Yes, the winds from the surface up to the jetstream change speed and direction with height. This is called speed and directional shear, a important ingredient for rotating updrafts. The missing component for thunderstorm intensity in the next 24 hours is the lack of instability, or combined heat and humidity. So, even though the chance is there, it is very low. Needless to say, we will be tracking the storms through the overnight in the Live Doppler 15 Fury Storm Center.
Besides the low storm risk, the larger impact to the area will be the 1-2″ of rain across the area which may lead to river flooding later this week.
After that, snow returns with a temperature reset for the next week. Don;t worry though, our wacky winter returns to above average temperatures about a week into February.

Surface front moves through early Wednesday morning
Futurecast has the Warm/Cold boundary moving through by late morning.
Futurecast has a brief period of heavy rainfall through early Wednesday morning as a weather system moves through. This weather system will drastically change our weather pattern from the dry warm air to the cold arctic which moves in through Wednesday afternoon.
This weather system will drop highs into the 20s by Thursday and Friday.
