A depiction of the jet stream during an arctic outbreak

This next week we are expecting to see some of the coldest air we’ve seen in a couple of years head our way. This pattern is what we sometimes term “The Siberian Express”. This pattern develops around Siberia and the cold air which is normally sitting across that area is dislodged by a warmer air mass which reaches into the upper atmosphere. This warmer air mass makes a passageway for the Siberian air to move from Canada to the United States. It will be windy and cold with wind chills well below zero early next week.
