Winters were more difficult in the pastFebruary 17th, 2013 at 11:06 am by Nicholas Ferreri under Weather
An event going on today at The Old Fort reminds us that winters were much more difficult to experience in the past. Remember, a fire was your only source of indoor heat and all the plumbing was outdoors. In today’s world, most of us spend relatively little time outside each day…basically we just go from one climate controlled building to another.
If you’d like to take a step back and learn about life in the past, check out the 18th Century Garrison weekend which concludes today at The Old Fort (1201 Spy Run Ave.). If you don’t know, a “garrison” is a military post. So, at this event, you’ll experience a day in the life of a soldier at the fort. There will be historical re-enactments to explain the duties of the military officers and also demonstrations of military drills. Artisans will be on hand with crafts and to explain quilting and cooking in the 1700s. There will even be a demonstration on how spoons were cast in pewter during that time.
Check this event out today from 10am-4pm, but be sure to bundle up. Under a partly cloudy sky, temperatures in the teens this morning will rise into the mid 20s during the afternoon.
